Beam Therapeutics ( BEAM ) is a cutting-edge biotech company focused on finding curative treatments for diseases using a form of gene editing called “base editing”. Simplistically, this involves switching out one of the four DNA letters (e.g. A to G or C to T) to alter a person’s DNA and, theoretically, cure their disease. It has been characterized as a “pencil with an eraser”, whereas probably the better-known alternative, CRISPR/CAS9 gene editing, can be conceptualized as a “pair of scissors”.
