2026 is off to a riveting start for the global oil industry. For years now, tensions had been mounting between the US and Venezuela. But very few people, I would imagine, would have guessed that, in the early hours of January 3rd of 2026, the US would launch a large-scale strike operation in the country that targeted military installations and the capital of Caracas. The immediate prize from this risky and undeniably controversial operation was the capture of President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, First Lady Cilia Flores. They are now located in New York, where they are facing charges by the US government. And in all likelihood, this will have significant geopolitical ramifications outside of the oil space for many years to come....
