Introduction:
During the last two months of 2025, the market was mostly flat and traded in a tight range between S&P 500 ( SPX ) levels 6600 and 6900. However, the first two weeks of 2026 have been decent so far. It also made new highs a couple of times in the first week of this year, and the SPX level 7000 is not out of reach. The bull market is widely expected to continue in 2026, but there are a lot of things happening all around, especially geopolitically. We may have a new tariff tantrum that is just starting with Europe in focus over the issue of Greenland. The market can have a big negative swing in a hurry, especially when the valuations are so rich. However, the new theme for 2026 is that the foreign markets are expected to perform better (than the U.S. markets), similar to the trend that started in 2025. The main reason may be that they are still much cheaper in terms of valuations compared to the S&P500. So, it may be wise to diversify somewhat and have some allocations to foreign developed markets, and possibly a small allocation to the emerging markets....
