MSC Industrial Direct ( MSM ) reported fiscal second-quarter results that fell short of Wall Street expectations, sending shares down as much as 5% in New York trading Wednesday before paring losses....

The industrial distributor posted revenue of $917.8 million for the quarter ended February 28, missing the consensus estimate of $930 million. Adjusted earnings also came in below expectations at $0.82 per share, compared with analyst forecasts of $0.84.

Profit rises but growth remains uneven

Despite the top- and bottom-line miss versus expectations, MSC Industrial Direct ( MSM ) delivered modest year-over-year growth.

Net income rose to $42.5 million, or $0.76 a share, from $39.3 million, or $0.70 a share.

Sales increased 2.9% from a year earlier, while operating income rose 4.1% to $64.8 million. Operating margin expanded slightly to 7.1%, or 7.5% on an adjusted basis.

The company also reported adjusted operating income of $69.1 million, reflecting continued cost controls and margin improvement initiatives.

Margins improve as cost actions take hold

MSC Industrial Direct ( MSM ) highlighted progress on profitability, with management pointing to structural cost reductions and improved gross margins.

Chief Executive Officer Martina McIsaac said, “I am encouraged by our performance which resulted in year-over-year operating margin expansion for the second consecutive quarter.”

The company noted that core customer sales outpaced overall performance for the third consecutive quarter, even as broader volume trends remained subdued.

While MSC Industrial Direct ( MSM ) did not emphasize earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization in its release, adjusted operating metrics pointed to underlying efficiency gains.

Outlook signals improving demand

Looking ahead, MSC Industrial Direct ( MSM ) forecast stronger momentum in the current quarter, projecting average daily sales growth of 5% to 7% and an adjusted operating margin between 9.7% and 10.3%.

Management indicated that sales optimization efforts and productivity initiatives are expected to support both growth and profitability in the second half of the fiscal year.

Still, the near-term miss on revenue and adjusted earnings overshadowed those expectations, contributing to the stock’s decline following the release.
