Village Super Market's Discount Should Not Be Ignored

Even though retail is not the most exciting space for me, mostly because of intense competition and low margins, there have always been some exceptions to this rule. A good example of this can be seen by looking at Village Super Market, Inc. ( VLGEA ), a rather small grocery chain that currently has 37 supermarkets spread throughout four different states. These are none other than New Jersey, New York, Maryland, and Pennsylvania. The company employs a very interesting business model, serving as the second largest member of the largest retailer-owned food cooperative in the nation, known as Wakefern Food Corporation. This gives it certain economies of scale that it might not have otherwise. However, recently, financial performance for the business has been mixed. The good news is that we are seeing a gradual increase in revenue and profits this year. But the real story here is valuation....
